The "Laguna Colorada" is a lagoon located within the Eduardo Abaroa Andean National Wildlife Reserve, in the potosino plateau near the border with Chile. The red coloration of its waters is due to red sediments and pigments of some types of algae.
The lagoon has an area of 54 km2 and an average depth of 35 centimeters, so it is common to observe different birds perched at its bottom.
It is a breeding ground for Andean flamingos, migratory birds that gather in large quantities in these mineral-rich waters, offering one of the most beautiful postcards in the lagoon.
Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world, is Bolivia's best-known tourist attraction and a must-see while traveling in South America 😍 This incredible place is visited by many people from all around, as you can see here! Do you see your own flag in this picture? 😉
@BoliviaHop Safe bus travel between Bolivia and Peru!
In total, we spend 35 days traveling through Chile, Bolivia and Peru.
In Chile, we visited: - Santiago: to have a look at the biggest city and the crowded capital of Chile. - We visited the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art. We experienced local markets (Mercado Central and Los Dominicos), spent a wonderful evening in the Bellavista neighborhood - the bohemian district and hiked to Cerro San Cristobal to have a nice view over the city. - Valparaiso: to have a rest and organize our next moves.
- San Pedro de Atacama: to train our bodies to much higher altitudes. - We did some biking in the desert in San Pedro de Atacama before going for a road trip in the Atacama desert to join Uyuni in Bolivia. We did many stops and spend 3 days in the desert with a lovely team in our 4WD. The landscapes we saw were terrific.
Arriving in Uyuni, Bolivia 🇧🇴 we spent time in: - Sucre: a nice white city to have a rest after the time spent in the desert which was really amazing but quite exhausting. - La Paz: as a quick step to reach our next destination.
- Titicaca Lake and Isla del Sol: to enjoy a laid back place for the day.
In Peru 🇵🇪, we were delighted to discover:
- Cuzco: with its central square called Plaza de Armas where we began all our walks, the beautiful churches all around the city, the white old houses and the colorful colonial balconies, Koricancha - the golden temple of the sun and the San Pedro Market. - From Cuzco, we went to Maras salt evaporation pods and Moray a center of Inca agricultural research. - We also went to Macchu Picchu and reached the top of La Montana. - Lima, the capital of Peru: from our base, the Miraflores district.
We had a good time in South America. We enjoyed a lot the discovery of the Inca Empire, the amazing landscapes we saw in the desert between Chile and Bolivia, the cute alpacas and the taste of avocados.
Our guide Maria gave us such a detailed explanation of the volcanic formation of these islands, and this cave, that the set sun and created this photo opportunity.
I headed to the back of the cave and the silhouettes of our group against the backdrop of Uyuni Salt Flats made this great shot. #uyuni#saltflats#greatcompany#sunsets#bolivia#getoutside#explore
