After a year scoping out asteroid Bennu’s boulder-scattered surface, the team leading NASA’s first asteroid sample return mission has officially selected a sample collection site.
The Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-Rex) mission team concluded a site designated “Nightingale” – located in a crater high in Bennu’s northern hemisphere – is the best spot for the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft to snag its sample.
The OSIRIS-REx team spent the past several months evaluating close-range data from four candidate sites in order to identify the best option for the sample collection. The candidate sites – dubbed Sandpiper, Osprey, Kingfisher, and Nightingale – were chosen for investigation because, of all the potential sampling regions on Bennu, these areas pose the fewest hazards to the spacecraft’s safety while still providing the opportunity for great samples to be gathered.
Site Nightingale is located in a northern crater 460 feet (140 meters) wide. Nightingale’s regolith – or rocky surface material – is dark, and images show that the crater is relatively smooth. Because it is located so far north, temperatures in the region are lower than elsewhere on the asteroid and the surface material is well-preserved. The crater also is thought to be relatively young, and the regolith is freshly exposed. This means the site would likely allow for a pristine sample of the asteroid, giving the team insight into Bennu’s history.
Although Nightingale ranks the highest of any location on Bennu, the site still poses challenges for sample collection. The original mission plan envisioned a sample site with a diameter of 164 feet (50 meters). Hello there! I'm Stephen ( @stephen13ennett) and it is my great honour to be given the opportunity to share some of my images with you today. I am a photographer based in the UK but I love to travel and take pictures of all the wonderful places I visit - especially if those places also happen to have excellent dark skies! I have always had an interest in space and the mysteries that lie out in the vastness beyond this tiny rock we live on, but the first time I saw the Milky Way with my own eyes that interest suddenly transformed into a passion. It happened on a holiday to Croatia with my wife, on the island of Mljet. It occurred to us that it would probably be quite a nice place to see the stars, so we looked for a place away from all the lights and ended up around the back of the hotel where they kept the bins. We looked up and there it was, burning brightly across the night sky, despite the annoyingly bright security light! Once my mind had recovered from being blown, my first thought was, ‘I need to take a picture of that.’
This picture is an old favourite of mine that I have recently reprocessed. It was taken five years ago in a little town called Stanley on the edge of the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho. This tipi was near to the place we were staying, helpfully lit from the side by a security light (I swear those things follow me around) with the Milky Way rising up in the sky beyond. It was one of those rare moments when everything just fell into place :)
The technical stuff:

It’s taken me a very, VERY long time to reach the point of being even comfortable with vulnerability and what it brings. But once I started and kept up with it even when it scared me, I didn’t wanna stop and I can confidently say I never will.
In this hilarious ass game of life, pain is literally inevitable. And as Scorpios, we’re gonna get MUCH more than our fair share of that. So do yourself, your mind and your emotions a favor and show the world why you’re the fucking shit. 💯
Comprising just 2% of your body’s total weight, the brain uses close to 25% of your total energy and oxygen intake. This seemingly disproportionate amount of energy is required to maintain the firing of the approximately 100 billion neurons contained in your brain. At the most fundamental level, our brain works through the passing of signals across these neurons. The signals are passed from neuron to neuron across small gaps known as synapses, of which there are an estimated 100 trillion in the typical brain. The intricate, still-not-well-understood firing patterns in the human brain account for part of the reason that it is just now being investigated in detail. With unprecedented advances in technology, we now have the ability to make (partial) artificial simulations of what is going on inside the cranium.
The video shown here is a demo from the recently developed “DigiCortex” Cortical Neural Network Simulator. This engine allows for a highly optimized, large-scale simulation of biologically plausible firing patterns across adjustable quantities of neurons. Very few computers in the world (if any) have the sufficient computing power to simulate the entirety of the human brain. As a result, the result seen here simulates only 8 million neurons (0.008% of total) and of 2 billion synapses (0.002% of total). No understanding of neuroscience or the inner workings of the model are needed to recognize the staggering complexity and activity in our brains, and I think that these simulations serve as a healthy reminder to take care of the enigmatic and powerful supercomputer that we each possess behind our eyes. I find the comparison between the Crab Nebula and human brain activity on the first slide equally as inspiring.
The mysteries surrounding the brain will continue to be at the forefront of modern science and our progress in neuroscience will likely unravel some philosophical knots that have been tied since antiquity.
2019 is coming to a close. I’ve spent this entire year working out a lot on my own. Some days I’ll listen to some music. Most times I won’t. I like to hear nothing but the wind and birds while I’m doing my thang. Not on some weird trip. One thing that we must understand is that in silence, something greater is talking to us. Here’s some things I’ve gathered over this past year. It’ll help you out a bit....
You know how people say “gut feeling”? A lot of us will make crazy ass life choices based on what our “gut” tells us to do. It is said that your gut is your second brain. Knowing this, why would you want to fill your gut with shit foods, prescription drugs and manufactured supplements? If your mind is clouded and you continue to have unclear thoughts, this is the reason.
Next thing... There are no such things as mental issues. Depression and anxiety. Your mental and emotional stress most times come from eating like shit. I’ve mentioned before that eating is an emotional thing. Certain foods trigger certain emotions. Eating too much foods cause blockage of thought, thus causing blockage of emotions. I did just say that your gut is your 2nd brain. The things that you put into your gut greatly control your brain, thus controlling your emotions.
The universe is made up of infinite vibrations, energies and frequencies. So is your brain. So in the ancient wisdoms, the universe is your mind...
We think with our conscious mind. That’s only 5% of the brain. We get held back by our subconscious mind. That makes up 95% of the brain. The subconscious mind IS the body. Every mental and emotional problem will manifest itself into some type of physical trait; pimples, rash, overweight, aches and pains, etc. To rid yourself of emotional and mental pains, you must unlock your body.....
Your brain, body and soul are one. When your head is not all there, it’s because you mistreat your body. If you’re body is in constant pain or laziness, it’s because you mistreat your thoughts.....
No one makes you mad. You make yourself mad. Life happens for you. How you react to people and situations is a test to see how grateful you are for life....
