#GeometryGames on your phone! Finally, a way to waste time while thinking hard and maybe learning something, instead of... um, doing those other things you should be doing. Brought to us by Horis International Limited, we have #Euclidea and #Pythagorea .
Euclidea has a set of geometric construction challenges, and you get stars for solutions that use only straight or curved lines (L star), or elementary Euclidean constructions (E star), or some combination of both. You also sometimes can get a star if you find all the possible solutions (V for variant star). As you progress, you earn new construction tools (perpendicular bisector, etc) that you can use in later constructions. The tools are fairly intuitive, and the game is forgiving (you can always undo). It's awkward that to get all the stars you sometimes have to back out and then redo the construction using different tools, and I find the emphasis on finding both L and E solutions a bit confusing because I can't tell them apart well enough. But I do like the creativity of having to think about different ways to solve the same problem!
There are different kinds hints, but only one an hour unless you pay a small charge that unlocks all of them. So far I've resisted.
Pythagorea has a different feel, and works with slope, reflections, distance, etc, on a 6x6 grid. There are no stars, just the ability to go to the next problem. I found some of the parallel line problems tiresome (you have to get creative to find a line with a particular slope that goes thru a point that is 2/5 off from an intersection point), but overall like this game better for its accessibility.
With both games I've had moments when I've suddenly figured out the solution while lying in bed trying to go to sleep. I haven't finished either game yet, but I'll keep poking at them. I've also just discovered the sequel, #Pythagorea60 - which is set up on a grid of equiangular triangles. I haven't had a chance to really start it but am looking forward to trying it.
