Too often when we talk to children about their favourite and least favourite subjects at school, Mathematics is mentioned as the least favourite subject most time. When we question children as to why, general responses range from “it’s boring”, “when am I going to use this?” and “it’s too hard.” We feel it is essential to make math learning not only fun (thereby providing motivation) but also relevant for students so they can fully benefit from it. Therefore, we are introducing...... "Brain Math". "Brain Math" is a fun, fast-paced game that encourages children (and adults!) to play with and love numbers. The goal of the game is to make simple math equations as quickly as possible, and connect them in crossword style grids. Be the first to connect all your tiles and you win! For Ages: 6+. ....because learning has to be fun. #kids #games #education #educationalgames #learning #childrengames #familyfun #thesmartkid #math #mathgames #kidsgames #school #familygamenight #mathgame

#Repost @flisatfun #bringbooksalive_numeracy • • • • • • The importance of zero in Place Value. Mr 8 was practising some Maths on a computer program set by his school. It’s not compulsory but he enjoys doing it. I noticed this morning he didn’t have a grasp on the place value questions when zero was in the number. So this afternoon I read both Mr 6 and Mr 8 the book “None the Number” by Oliver Jeffers. It’s a terrific tale about the importance of none or zero. I then (yet again!) hacked my Kmart money box to get them to create numbers (up to hundreds for Mr 6) and (thousands for Mr 8) with a zero in it. They then had to write down and tell me what the number was. It proved more difficult than they thought but with practise Mr 8 soon was wanting to create larger numbers up to the tens of thousands using the pop sticks. It was a great visual representation of the importance of zero in holding the place value in a number. #flisattable #flisattableplay #handsonlearning #handsonlearningideas #mathactivities #mathsactivities #mathcenters #mathscentres #mathgames #mathgamesforkids #mathsgames #mathsonmondays #wherelearningmeetsplay #playandlearn #bookishplay #manywaystoplay #thebookstork @thebookstorkauflisa

Albert Einstein said, "Play is the highest form of research." So after everyone's math work is done for the day with our @mathusee curriculum, we like to play a math-related game. Today we played "Sum Swamp", a fun boardgame using addition and subtraction skilks. We also love #sushigo, #passthepig, and #mathdice. Learning should be exciting! We're always on the look out for good games. #homeschool #6kids #mathgames #mathskills #learning #lovetolearn #boardgames #cardgames #dicegames #games #learnbyplay #mathusee #childhood

Ever teach a lesson that ends up with the kids confused and you frustrated and wondering what even happened?! That was me on Tuesday. I taught Part-Part-Whole in a bar model for the first time ever, and the first time my sweeties had ever been introduced to it. After the whirlwind hot mess of a lesson, I decided we needed to regroup. My incredible coworker shared a lesson idea with me and it was MAGIC! My students just GOT it. . . . We dropped 10 apple erasers onto an apple cut out. The erasers that landed on the cut out were one “part,” and the erasers not on the cut out were the other “part.” We drew our pictures, added them up, and viola! We found our whole! This activity was soooo easy to differentiate. Check out the last two pictures for some of my friends who used their bar model to write Fact Families, too. The best part? They absolutely loved it and, after a few rounds, could play it independently. #firstgrade #firstgrademath #firstgradeteacher #iteachfirst #elementaryteacher #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #teachertribe #apples #partpartwhole #barmodel #manipulatives #mathgames #mathisfun #applemath #targetdollarspot #targetteachers

Conceptual understanding is more valuable that practicing a procedure EVERY SINGLE TIME. We’re starting the {practically} eternity long fraction study that IS fifth grade😂😂😂 I’ve been teaching fractions since it was a sixth grade thing- and I had to step back at least once a year then- to remind myself that some kids are just not developmentally ready for a certain concept. When they are, I will know. There’s no sense in teaching kids a bunch of procedures that mean nothing to them, just so that they arrive at an accurate answer. Today, I had an aha moment when hardly anyone in one class could talk to me about WHY we need common denominators when we add or subtract fractions. We need to back up. We need manipulatives in hand. We need to PROVE that 1/2, 2/4 and 3/6 are equivalent. You need to be SURE the value isn’t changing, just the name- and the size of the parts of the whole. We grabbed fraction strips today for the first time this year. They made a difference. Stay tuned. I’ll post some videos and practice problems that help us prove that it makes sense to call 2/3 a name like 6/9- and we’ll do it with the strips. They’ll get it. Not all of the same day- and DEFINITELY not in the same way. But they’ll get it and they’ll be able to TALK about it. What are you doing to build fraction sense? We played Fraction Top It (War) in small group today... and I saw some lightbulbs get bright!! 💡💡💡

#mathweek so we reviewed some Number Strand outcomes: Place value, expanded notation, ordering whole and decimal numbers. Playing is easy. I divide my class into two teams. Each team is given a question to answer. If the team gets the question right they earn one point AND the chance to shoot a basket. They can choose to shoot from a 1-point 2-point or 3-point line. I usually have both teams answer the same questions but with different numbers to figure out. So in each round, both teams have a chance to win up to four points. My favorite way to practice coin identification, and even counting mix coin combinations! I saw this on Pinterest years ago and it has always been a huge hit with my students. Best part is once it’s prepped, you always have a go to activity that is easy to adapt no matter what levels of students you are working with!! All you need are an empty coffee can, plastic coins, a hot glue gun and a sharpie maker. Most of the popsicle sticks get a coin glued to them but on a small fraction write the word “bankrupt”. To play pass the coffee can around in a circle allowing students to pull out one stick at a time. Once they pull out a stick they have to indenting the coin. If they get it right they can keep it. If not they put it back. But be careful! There is always a chance of pulling out a “bankrupt” stick... if this happens then that student has to put all of their coins back in the can. . . . #specialedwhatwhat #iteachsped #specialeducation #mathgames #sped #spedteacher #specialed #specialeducationteacher #spedteacher #autismteacher #autismclassroom #teachersofinstagram

Do you have any games you love playing with your students to practice or review new skills? If so, let’s share them in the comments! • One of my favorite games is ZAP! The students are broken up into teams. The first team gets a question to answer. If they get it correct, they earn 4 points. They then send a member up to the zap board to draw a card. The cards can add points to their own team or others, or subtract points from their own team or others. They could ZAP a team which means the team loses ALL their points. They could even ZAP their own team. 😂 My kids always get really into the game and it’s a very fun day! • #teacher #teachersofinsta #teachersofthegram #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #floridateachers

Math Compositions: ⠀ In writing, a composition is when you put your thoughts into words on paper. ⠀ In math, a composition is when you put your thoughts onto paper (or a whiteboard) in numbers. ⠀ ⠀ My K-2nd grade homeschool co-op math class came up with these thoughts about the number 6. The 1+1+... idea made them laugh out loud. ⠀ ⠀ Math compositions are fun --- DO try this at home! ⠀ ⠀ How do your kids like to play with math?

I started a separate account for #dyslexia and #dyscalculia teaching resources: @the_dyslexia_tutor .. My first post is about why teachers should avoid using “Touch Math” for students with normal to above average IQs (most dyslexics), and what methods do work for students with dyslexia and dyscalculia. . So many teachers in the U.S. have been misled by the marketing materials for “Touch Math” and lured by the quick results in the short-term, without realizing the long-term damage done to students’ mathematical intelligence. . Because the public school my son attended used “Touch Math” in the special ed classroom and “Common Core” in the main classroom, I had to pull him out and start homeschooling last year. Neither of those curricula are effective for teaching math with dyslexia/dyscalculia and there were no options left in public school for him to succeed in learning mathematics. Homeschooling has been great because I have already done the research of what methods are effective and I share them all on the website. . I also share the research and links about the ineffectiveness of both #CommonCoreMath and #TouchMath on my website

This week’s Where’s the Math Wednesday is all about math games that can be played in the car. 🚗 And what a fantastic time to practice our math skills! My own kids are often bored on car trips, and will play games with me for longer periods of time in the car than they would at home (surrounded by toys 🤖 🧸). . Lately my 4th grader and 1st grader have both been into “Ways to Make 5.” This game requires no materials and is so simple. I’ll call out a number, such as 5, and my kids take turns thinking of creative ways to make that number. For instance: “3 + 2” ✅ “3 1/2 + 1 1/2” ✅ “-1 + 6” ✅ “9 - 4” ✅ “10 / 2” ✅ “2 * 2 + 1” ✅ . What’s great about this game is that it can be played with kids of different ages, with bigger numbers for older kids. And it reinforces the importance of being flexible with numbers. 🎉 . Thank you so much to @countingwithkids for inviting me to participate in this #wheresthemathwednesday event! ❤️ . #mathisfun #mathgames #mathiseverywhere #ilovemath #iteach #iteachtoo #iteachmath #mathtutor #math #maths #mathmathmath

🚦Stopped at a red light with your kids? Turn it into something fun AND incorporate math while waiting - do a blast-off countdown! 🚀 Have your kids guess how long they think it will be until the light turns green. ⏱ 10 seconds? 17? 23? Then countdown from that number and see if your guess was right. If not, make another guess (you can talk about how it has to be a smaller number since it's getting closer to changing!) and count down again. Then, when the light finally does turns green be sure to yell "Blast-off!" really loud! 📣 For older kids, while you continue driving you can add ➕ all the numbers up that you counted down from to see what the total amount of time to blast off was. _____________________ The math skills your kids are learning here are estimation, reverse counting, number order, and addition. ➡️ For more great math ideas to do in the car 🚗 check out @countingwithkids #wheresthemathwednesday post today!

Math centers are a HUGE part of my weekly routine 😃. In my room, we do them every Tuesday through Thursday. On Mondays, I do a classroom transformation and on Fridays, I teach whole group lessons. Using centers in my classroom helps me spiral review skills students have learned earlier in the year ✏️. Right now, my students are learning division. We've already finished, addition, subtraction, rounding, geometry, and multiplication strategies. This is one example of a game I currently have in my math center rotations 🍨. I change my games out about every 3 weeks so I don't have to prep centers every week and the kids have a variety of games they get to experience. How do you teach math in your classroom? Are you a math-center fan or whole-group queen? #igteachers #mathcenters #mathtips
