Recently, the most popular & subscribed to YouTuber (Pewdiepie) went to Morocco, a wedding gift he received from his fiance's family. They went for a weekend and he uploaded a vlog of their time there. At first I was excited about this. Morocco, like most African countries, is a country rarely featured in YouTubers's videos & vlogs. It seems as though, to most white people, African countries are not worth exploring. I watched his video and was quickly disappointed, my disappointment then turned into anger. Pewdiepie & his gf travel so often, I have grown familiar with the way they act in foreign countries and how they talk about them, especially Japan (which they seem to visit every 2 months) yet their video on Morocco was mostly a compilation of belittling & mocking the locals and their attempt to make some money, and complaining about the state of Marrakesh's streets, constantly filming it's dirty streets and claiming that people throw things anywhere "because why not". While they stayed in a fancy chain hotel, went to the Yves Saint Laurent museum and a Yves Saint Laurent botanical garden (which no Moroccan would ever go to) their video basically focus on complaining about Morocco's poverty as they ended their weekend trip with a water park...?? So here's a reminder that African countries are not uncivilized, and they don't owe it to any European or American yt to fit to their rich & privileged standards of travel. Morocco is a beautiful country I miss a lot that struggles a lot but is beautiful in ways you clearly don't understand, with one of the kindest & most generous people you'll ever meet. Stay home next time.
