~ Guadiana || The river is clear in the morning light. Bright in all the strength of the rising tide, still going low, still going low. It shines like silver and brings joy to the eyes. A fishing boat goes downstream for the catch, seagulls fly, a black cat looks around at the waterfront stones. There’s a fig tree, stone steps, wooden benches, in a clear morning soon filled with families, teens, old people, fishermen, and a young girl who marvels, "grandfather, grandfather, look how the river shines!" | One of Guadiana's affluents, Odeleite, is salinized in an extension of 3 km and the populations of the interior of Castro Marim region are being served by water tanks, according to today's newspaper @publico.pt. "By the end of the century, Algarve will have less 80% of water", is the news title. Ink on paper, 2019

🙏Prayers for St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Ennis Texas as they hold their fundraiser today 🙏 they will be auctioning off this #woodburned artwork which I was commissioned for. *****************************************John Nepomucene, also known as Saint John of Nepomuk, John of Pomuk. born c. 1345, Nepomuk, Bohemia [now in Czech Republic) feast day May 16), he was a Priest, Archbishop Vicar-General and Cannon Lawyer. known as Martyr of the Confessional, On May 16, 1383 John of Nepomuk, refused to betray the confession of Queen Johanna to her husband, King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia, so he was thrown into the Moldau River where he drowned- a martyr to the secrecy of the confessional. In 1719 his grave in the Prague cathedral was opened, and his tongue was found to be uncorrupted though shriveled. He was canonized in 1929. His icon is usually depicted with a cross and palms in his hands which represent his martyrdom and victory over death and sin. Some icons reflect a hlao with five stars. **************************************** To personalize the artwork, in his hand I placed the current church building consecrated to him in 1904, making him its patron saint. A map of Texas is also incorporated with a flag of the Czech Republic to represent the roots of the Czechoslovakian congregation located in Ennis, Texas. The background text is on hand painted and aged paper and reflects the history of the parish.
St. John Nepomucene pray for us🙏
