I hope this photo of a boxing orangutan dismays and disgusts you as much as it does me.
We have a rare opportunity to voice our objection to the exploitation of orangutans by the entertainment industry In Thailand.
Esteemed Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Aaron Geloski’s photograph of a boxing orangutan from Safari World in Thailand has been entered and made the final 25 in the Lumix People’s Choice award.
Please join me in voting for Aaron’s image. The attention a win and the resulting media coverage will hopefully encourage Thai authorities to stop these shows and stop the horrendous abuse of these gentle, endangered animals.
People's Choice Award, @nhm_wpy Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2019: Losing the fight
Congratulations to everyone involved in this year's competition. Some jaw-dropping images as always (that eagle shot by Audun Rikardsen..WTF). Pleased to play a small part in this year's competition, with a nomination for the People's Choice Award.
You can see the images (and place your votes hint hint) here: nhm.ac.uk/visit/wpy/community/peoples-choice/2019/23/losing-the-fight.html
About the shot:
Orangutans have been used in degrading performances at Safari World, Bangkok, for decades.
The shows were temporarily stopped in 2004 due to international pressure, but today they continue – twice a day, every day – with hundreds of people paying to watch the orangutans box, dance, play the drums and perform other routines.
In the wild orangutans are shy and elusive animals that will lead solitary lives. In captivity they often suffer from stress and depression. A lifetime at Safari World is a lifetime of suffering.
Taken as part of my campaign to raise awareness about cruelty in the wildlife tourism industry.

Auf jedenfall geht es morgen früh nach #thailand ! Ich freu mich riesig, 1. weil ich das erste Mal in ein asiatisches Land fliege und 2. weil Ende Jahr was ganz besonderes stattfindet... 👀😍🙌🏼
While we say goodbye to Bali with only a few hours left. We are now off to Thailand for some new fun adventures. Hard to believe we are already half way through our trip! #byebyebali#hellothailand@ricolilley
