This type of drumming is very controversial!
So the drunk drumming, Dilla feel thing gets a bad reputation. It's obviously not the way you play every song but having an understanding of it is quite helpful. Especially if you are playing hip hop and want to be authentic. (Still a work in progress for me!!)
I got into this style when I was introduced to Dilla and Apollo Brown and i love this stuff. Then diving into some Chris Dave and Marc Colenburg with Robert Glasper opened my eyes and ears even more.
More than any other style the trick is to play with the music and match it as much as possible. Recording yourself and listening back is also essential.
BUT the best thing I ever did was learn to play VERY VERY precisely. By controlling my limbs so much that I hit them all at exactly the same time gave me the control to play everything out of time and push time even further. By learning to play perfectly you learn the skills to play imperfectly.
