"Negs" or "Negative reps" is performing only the eccentric part of a lift. Almost every exercise there is can be split into the eccentric and concentric phase, the eccentric phase is where the muscle is stretched while the concentric phase is where the muscle is contracted. So in the above sofa press, the concentric part of the lift would be pushing the sofa up (squeezing the chest muscles), and the eccentric part would be lowering the sofa back down (which stretches chest muscles as you lower the weight). Most of us pay more attention to the concentric part of the lift than the eccentric, putting all the effort into pushing the bar up during a press and dropping down to the chest with little or no control. Remember, both phases are important for anyone trying to get stronger, to build bigger muscles or to perform an exercise correctly. Also, the eccentric part of the lift is more important in terms of hypertrophy and strength. Benefits of super slow negatives: 1. Increased force and intensity 2. Lowered fatigue 3. Increased hypertrophy 4. Lowered risk of injury 5. Improve flexibility 6. Learn and execute tough exercises like pull ups and push ups. Tips: 1. Do not overdo this. Limit it to twice a week. For example, bench today and squat day after tomorrow. 2. Pick your weakest exercise and perform anywhere between 5-10 reps with a 10-second negative at every rep. In the above press, I pushed up with both hands and lowered with a single hand to mimic heavy negative reps. 3. Get enough protein and sleep afterwards as you'll need it for all the destruction caused with this style of negative training.
