Louis Kahn - Salk Institute for Biological Studies -10010 N Torrey Pines Rd, La Jolla, CA 92037. The Salk Institute was founded in 1960 by #JonasSalk, MD, developer of the polio vaccine. Salk selected Louis I. #Kahn to design the laboratory is #LaJolla. Building began spring of #1962. Kahn’s masterwork consists of two six story structures that flank a grand travertine courtyard. Towers jutting into the courtyard provide offices with Pacific Ocean views for senior faculty. The building site offered harsh oceanfront design challenges as the building needed to stand up to the salt air and sun with minimal maintenance but also have an elegant connection to the natural site. Kahn utilizes #concrete, #teak, lead, glass and steel. The teak surrounding the study towers and west office windows were left un-lacquered to silver in the elements and compliment the color of the concrete and #travertine. The open courtyard is a field of this travertine with a single river of channeled water flowing through towards the Pacific Ocean. Luis #Barragan suggested suggested that Kahn should not add any landscape at all, but rather a stone plaza with a single water element. The results were profound. The Salk Institute was designated as a historical #landmark in 1991. The entire 27-acre (11 ha) site was listed by the #California#Historical Resources Commission in 2006 for the National Register of Historic Places.
