Here’s a little creative encouragement:
While it’s great to hear the word ‘talent’ and receive compliments about art... I always have the thoughts: thank you! But you can do it too!
Because here’s the thing: creativity can be LEARNED. Everything can be learned. Have you heard of @youtube ? @skillshare ?
Sometimes the word talent feels a bit bogus.
I think there there is a time in our growing up, where if creativity isn’t practiced, we start to become afraid to use it. The ones that keep it in practice, are maybe the ones we think creativity comes easier to. Or maybe they are just a little less afraid to try it more often. But either way, the only difference from them, and someone who would consider themselves lesser of an artist is: practice & time.
When I left high school, I had a desire to open an Etsy shop. But the question was, what would I sell? I loved ALL art. There are so many possibilities, but I didn’t want to sell a huge smorgasbord of different items. I wanted to pick something and do it well.
Naturally, overtime, block printing became something I loved. I wasn’t amazing at it right away... I learned SO much from other artists and courses.
Besides the actual creation of art, here is a bunch of things I had to LEARN that did not come easy or natural to me:
- Web design
- Illustrator & other digital programs
- Self promotion
- How to run an Instagram (but this one is always changing and I’m not so sure I know how to all the time)
- Budgeting / taxes / BTS money stuff (also still really learning these 🤪)
ALL this to say: YOU CAN LEARN IT ALL! Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. Or the sun to the moon. People are not better than you, maybe more practiced, but we are all on equal standing with each other and have our own potential to be unlocked.
Did you need to hear this today?
Ps- this doesn’t just apply to creativity & art!
