A boy and his donkey. Orzu of Ravmed village offers a proud smile as he tends to one of his family's animals in the shade of a gorgeous sunny fall afternoon. I see Orzu in passing on another day and he is in fact out and about with this very same donkey. Children take part in the family work of tending the land and animals here in the Pamirs from an early age as it's quite natural to lend a hand. This may be because there is an awful lot to do, and the help of all hands is needed.
As beautiful and idyllic as life appears in Ravmed and other villages like it in the Pamirs, villagers' lives here are changing. Globalization is bringing in a host of challenges to the simple and grounded village life. With access to shops stocking easy to prepare and ready made foods that lack the nutrients of crops grown here for thousands of years, health issues have become a concern in recent decades. Cases of diabetes and high blood pressure are now common among Pamiri people, as white sugar has largely replaced the natural sweeteners found in mulberries and other local fruits. Technology and commerce also pose challenges.
Due to the new economy post-USSR, widespread trading of crops doesn't go on like it used to, and families can't produce all of the crops they need on their own. This leads to taking short cuts like replacing items long grown locally with store bought items such as flour and pasta. Climate change is also shortening the growing and grazing seasons. Further, many children of younger generations are moving away to live in either the capital city of Dushanbe, as well as cities in Russia and Europe for work. This leaves a shortage of crucial hands to work in the fields and bring the animals to pasture. The Pamiri people find themselves at a crossroads where their age old traditions are in fact at risk of being lost. Still, I find myself dreaming of coming to live in Ravmed for a time.
See insta stories for details, but my favorite Venice memory was buying plain white masks with my classmates and wandering around Venice. We tried to get as lost in the winding streets as we could and find our way back to St. Marks square. Tourists kept stopping us for pictures -walking around in creepy white masks drew attention. So much attention in fact that we got photographed for a local newspaper!

Our strength lies in the beauty of our differences, it makes us who we are. A Kaleidoscope of dreams, beliefs and different hopes. They are often these different paths that lead us to the same sea. 🌊
We share a language we don’t talk about. It’s not about where you come from, the car you drive or what God you pray for. Here we all breathe the same air. There are no borders, this is the feeling that unites us. 💗☀️
Got to take a little ride out on the ⛵️sail catamaran⛵️ - so cool! The water was perfectly blue and clear all the way out. 🌊
Our take on Hymer camper vans. This was a fun little design concept for them.
