⁣ BE A KID - BE AN ATHLETE⁣ ⁣ I get it.. “But Rob, you talk about mechanics all the time!” INDIVIDUALIZATION! We need to identify which kids need “mechanical work” and which kids need to just play shortstop for more reps. Which kids have the mental capacity to consume information, process information, apply information, and decide if said information is going to allow them to be a better “Insert Goal Here.” I’ll be the first one to admit I was NOT that type of kid. Do not talk to me about mechanics because I will dive down a rabbit hole I don’t want to be in lol. ⁣ ⁣ So here’s my thing… ⁣ ⁣ To be a great “pitcher” there needs to be a foundation. I will always say that athleticism should be your foundation for reasons I won’t even get into. The danger of being a PO since age 6 is your body is only adapting to movements specific to throwing.. there’s not much deviation there. ⁣ EFFICIENT DRIVE LEG MECHANICS⁣ ⁣ Aside from a lot of content I’ve been producing recently on the dynamic of authentic vs unauthentic drive leg stability this is going to be in regards to the overall mechanics of an efficient drive leg. ⁣ ⁣ Working here with Analysis Client @Jonathan.m.cohen who isn’t fully maximizing his drive leg during his delivery. Now it’s tricky at times because although he creates good momentum with the angle of his tibia during his drive he’s not fully able to express optimal force nor accept force as he begins his drive. ⁣ ⁣ The goal for Jonathan now is to establish the movement pattern in his drive first n foremost. Why? He must be able to learn how to put himself into a position of optimal force product and stabilization. ⁣ AUTHENTIC HIP/SHOULDER SEPARATION⁣ ⁣ I think we all know the importance of Hip/Shoulder Separation in the pitching mechanics. I believe there's been a few studies showcasing how a good majority of pitching velocity is made up from the pitchers ability to increase the separation between their hips and shoulders. ⁣ ⁣ The common misconception I see/hear is guys trying to “force” this separation by aggressively counter rotating their trunk throughout their drive phase. ⁣ ⁣ For me the goal should be how can I effortlessly sequence my body through time and space to naturally increase my power output. ⁣ ⁣ Now we can talk a whole lot about the different things that go into being able to do this but probably the biggest breakdown I see with youth throwers is having a limited amount of active movement potential therefore the body compensates and doesn’t express as much power output to be had.
